Health & Safety Statement

Stafford District Scout Council’s policy is to provide safe and healthy working conditions for all volunteers and users of the campsite facilities.
1. The person responsible for the management of safety at Sherratts Wood Camp is the District Chairman.
2. Any voluntary staff member or user becoming aware of unsafe practices, equipment or working conditions should report this to the Warden or, in writing to the District Chairman.
3. Sherratts wood by nature of its environment and activities has a variety of potential dangers and risks not normally present in one workplace. The presence of trees, tree surgery equipment, grass and shrub cutting equipment, open fires, gas cooking equipment, gas bottles, adventure courses, climbing/abseiling, the shooting range, archery equipment, vehicles, office and workshop tools and equipment pose many risks. These potential dangers together with the use of the site by large numbers of young people means that all voluntary staff, instructors and users must be particularly vigilant and continually attempting to achieve safe working practices
4. Particular but not exclusive dangers are :-

  • All machinery used by on site voluntary staff
  • The Climbing/ abseiling tower
  • The Adventure courses
  • Wood Piles
  • The Woodland Drainage ditches
  • The Archery Field (when in use)
  • The Rifle range
  • Falling trees and branches in woodland areas

5. It is a requirement that all that use the campsite act in a reasonable and proper manner with regard to their personal behaviour, the care of the facilities, the conduct of activities, the duty of care, risk assessment and health and safety issues.
6. It is a further requirement that those people conducting activities have the appropriate training, expertise, accreditation, authorisation and where appropriate, qualifications to do so.
7. CHILD PROTECTION. It is the policy of the Scout association to safeguard the welfare of all members and users of its premises by protecting them from physical, sexual and emotional harm.
In order to meet these responsibilities, Stafford District Scouts council require that users of Sherratts Wood Scout Campsite sign below, undertaking that all adults in their party have been deemed as suitable to work with young people by their own organisation and that any contravention of the Scout Association Child Protection could lead to the scout Association initiating its reporting and referral procedures. Please Note that making a signature of acceptance of the above requirements is an integral part of the booking form and a pre-requisite of anyone using the site.
8. Cars that take kit down to any of the Glades MUST return to the main car Park for the duration of the camp, and No vehicles are allowed on any of the camping fields
